CHAPTER ELEVEN

WYATT WAITED ALL DAY for Big E to say something. He thought for sure he would do it first thing when Wyatt got back to the ranch with doughnuts. When he didn’t show up for breakfast, he figured the old man would wait until dinner. The whole time they ate Mason’s spaghetti and meatballs, Wyatt was prepared to answer questions about Harper.

But Big E said nothing. It was almost worse than being confronted. Wyatt started to wonder if he had already said something to Gran. She had been looking at Wyatt funny all through dinner. She even asked him to help clean up.

Wyatt rolled the sleeves of his flannel shirt up to his elbows. He started scraping the scraps of food left over into the garbage while the sink filled up with water. Gran busied herself with wiping down the kitchen table. Wyatt wasn’t sure if he should engage her in small talk or not. She didn’t say anything so neither did he. Gran moved to her spot next to him and silently dried the dishes he washed.

He’d never felt so guilty before even though it wasn’t exactly like he did anything wrong. There wasn’t anything truly bad about being friends with Harper.

“So,” Gran said as they got close to being finished. “You gonna tell me what you told Corliss today?”

Wyatt exhaled the breath he had been holding since she’d started that sentence. Gran wasn’t worried about Harper; she was too focused on everything that was happening on the ranch.

“I’ve been thinking it might be more cost-effective to put in some wildlife-friendly fencing that will keep the cattle in but allow the pronghorn, elk, and deer to migrate safely across our land. In the end, it will cost less to do that than replace broken fencing over and over again.”

“What’s that going to entail?” she inquired as she tossed the overly damp dishcloth aside and got a fresh one from the drawer in the island.

“I learned about wildlife-friendly fencing on one of my last jobs. It uses a lot less barbed wire. You build the fence a little shorter so adult animals can jump over it and you hang the bottom wire high enough for other animals to crawl under. That way we reduce tangling. You could also add gates, drop-downs or other passages in places where the wildlife tend to cross the most, like the spot I found the other day.”

Gran picked up another plate and dried it carefully. “That’s something you learned on one of your jobs, huh?”

“Guess my traveling finally came in handy for the family.”

“Guess so.” She picked up another plate. “Your brother and sister can help you with the new fencing when you’re ready to get started on it.”

Corliss had already offered her assistance and they were going to have Ryder help out on his day off. Corliss wanted Nash to focus on the horses. Gran still needed to feel like she was in charge though, so Wyatt just nodded.

Big E returned to the kitchen.
